About North Port

North Port is a city in Sarasota County in the Gulf Coast region of Southwest Florida. Famous for its many beautiful city parks, North Port is also home to Warm Mineral Springs and the Atlanta Braves' spring training program.

North Port was originally developed as the northern and Sarasota County portion of Charlotte County's Port Charlotte - hence it's original name of North Port Charlotte. In 1974 city residents dropped the Charlotte, making it a separate city.

Unlike many towns in the region famous for their beaches, North Port is over 95% land, less than 5% water. However, North Port does feature 80+ miles of freshwater canals, nine miles of the Myakkahatchee Creek and portions of the Myakka River. In addition to these waterways, the city has created quite a number of trails, bike paths, and city parks.

One of North Port's most famous spots is Warm Mineral Springs Park, a natural spring that maintains an 87 degree temperature and has one of the highest mineral counts of springs worldwide. North Port is also home to Little Salt Spring, an archaeological and paleontological site maintained by the University of Miami. Little Salt Spring has preserved both Paleo-Indian and early Archaic artifacts, fossil bones, and now-extinct megafauna.

As of 2020, North Port is the Spring Training home of the Atlanta Braves. CoolToday Park is a 6,200 seat baseball park (with room for 8,000) featuring the team clubhouse, training facilities, and multiple baseball and mixed-use fields. The new sports complex is expected to become the hub of new residential and commercial districts.

North Port recently finished construction and opened the North Port Aquatic Center. Much more than a local city swimming pool, the center features a lazy river, heated competition pool, drop slides, splash ground, pavilions, a snack shack, and more.
